Rose Street Market in Melbourne

When & Where: The Rose St. Artists’ Market is situated at 60 Rose Street, Fitzroy in between Brunswick and Nicholson Streets.

The Rose St. Artists’ Market operates every Saturday and Sunday, 11am till 5pm while the Diner and rooftop bar opens at 7am.

My experience: This is a cute little market in the middle of Melbourne, Fitzroy. Lots of really interesting stallholders and funky and quirky people around. I absolutely love the vibe here, there is art in the air and everyone is so different. It is a very unique experience. Although I am not doing great here I love to hanging out with the other stallholders. They are so welcoming and friendly, its absolutely beautiful. They are just happy people, living a very different life style to most people working 9-5 in an office. There are artists, designers, photographers and makers from all different places over the world, offering their creations. They are real free-spirits and in love with what they do for a living. There is an amazing choice of different jewellery styles on offer, artwork, paintings, prints, candles, clothes, plants and yummy treats.

Last time my stall was next to Kyle's. Kyle Weyburne is an artist from New Zealand, a writer and a jewellery maker. He told me he is only doing the jewellery "because it brings in some money" but he does have a passion for his unconventional creations, no doubt. He makes cuff links, necklaces, bracelets and rings using untypical elements like scrabble letters, tiny toys and the letters from keyboards. Its jewellery mainly for guys I’d say and this is something you don’t see around very much.

Kyle has some huge pieces of art at home that will probably never fit on anyone’s wall. He told me he built a shed “especially for one particular painting because I couldn’t fit it anywhere else. So the shed is exactly as big as the painting.” He is a very warm and open-hearted person, we had some great laughs that day. Make sure you go and see him when you are there next time. It is so hard to find gifts for guys but Kyle will sure be able to help with that!

Cowrie Market in Torquay

When & Where: Third Sunday of the month, September to April inclusive, 10am-3pm at the Torquay Foreshore

My Experience: My favorite market of all times! It is so close to home and I have been lucky enough to become friends with some of the stall holders and market goers over the past 3 years. There is lots of different food around, and many many stallholders offering anything you can think of. My favourites there are “That Place” that’s where I get my breakfast and then there is Will and “Perla Tacos” and an African family that offers beautiful food for lunch!

Because Anak-Anak has been attending this market for a while now mums come and look us up to get more of our great pants because their kids grew out the old ones or they just want to get the new styles. It is beautiful to have a little bit of a following in Torquay now. The mums have experienced the great quality of our pants and just can’t get enough! And that makes me so happy and I always look forward to it.

Last time my stall was next to Michelle from “Michyann Blankets”. She is an absolute sweetheart and started her stallholder journey 2015 when she made blankets and bibs for friends and family. Now she has a beautiful stall with lots of different style cotton flannelette blankets and bibs: “I only ever make two the same. You won’t see the same blanket around. So each baby has their own little blanket”, she tells me proudly.

“I love getting feedback like when mums tell me their children are older now but they still love to take their blankets to bed with them. That is so special to me.” I can relate to this and love hearing stories about how much people appreciate what I made for them. Michelle and I share a passion for sewing and creating. She is a beautiful person and I loved having her stall next to mine and enjoyed chatting with her throughout the day.

It was amazing, the sun was out, hardly any wind and everyone was in a good mood. There are always lots of families around in Torquay who enjoy walking over the market and along the foreshore.

When & Where: The market is typically held on the 3rd Saturday of every month from October to April from 9am to 2pm amongst the beautiful stringybark gums of the historic Emu Plains Reserve in Balnarring. January markets run from 3pm to 8pm.

My Experience: This is a gorgeous setting under the stringy barks of the beautiful gumtrees. Absolutely beautiful. Great stallholders an amazing variety on offer and a playground right in the middle of the market – great for kids. It was the first time for me to have my whole family come along to a market. Scott, my husband, had a great time with our girls and he loved trying the different food vans. We had pizza for breakfast, the girls got sparkly face paintings and ice cream at the end of the day.

They also bought some fantastic Play Doh from our neighbours Doh Re Mi. They make non-toxic play dough for adults and children. The adult versions are scented and come in a beautiful little tin. Coffe, Mint, Strawberry, Peppermint and Vanilla are just a few. What a great and special gift idea for a “secret santa” at work for example! They are supposed to help you being more mindful and to destress. They might have a similar meditative effect as the adult colouring books that have been around for a while.

Sarah is an amazingly calm and relaxed person spreading a great vibe – very helpful for when I run around like a headless chicken when I misplaced my card reader again. It was so much fun – my girls loved playing with their play dough and that made my day a lot easier as it was super busy! Look Sarah and her business up – She is just rad and her products are, too!

Anak-Anak will be at these markets in November:

Rose Street Market: 11th of November

Cowrie Market: 19th of November

Emu Plains Market:18th of November
